Project investigators are also coordinating the inclusion and expansion of the IDGE program to two educator populations:
- other Upward Bound educators and
- local middle and secondary teachers of the targeted Geoscience students.
Originally, project investigators were coordinating the expansion of the IDGE program to include the Upward Bound program at WVU-Tech. On December 13, Dr. Cartwright met with Ms. Beverly Wattie from WVU-Tech and Ms. Barbary Cary to discuss the expansion of the Geosciences course to her summer UB program. However, because of the recent grant transfer to a new institution with its own Upward Bound program, project investigators will be utilizing this new Upward Bound program as an expansion program where the original grant goals will be reached.
The new targeted Upward Bound expansion program is located at the new institution, Marshall University. Ms. Jacqueline Hersman is the Upward Bound director and has identified the targeted teacher, Mr. Ron King who is 9th grade general science teacher. IDGE will sponsor Mr. King’s attendance at the 5 day GLOBE workshop at the NRAO in Green Bank, WV in July 2007.
To coordinate the expansion of GLOBE and student experiences with GLOBE, project investigators have begun working with Jenny Bardwell of the HSTA (Health Sciences & Technology Academy) program to identify those interested teachers in the relevant counties served by either WVSU or MU Upward Bound programs. This program and the active HSTA secondary teachers were targeted because of their demonstrated commitment to student success in science, both inside and outside the classroom. HSTA teachers are required to be involved with informal after-school science clubs. Because of this initial connection facilitated through IDGE, a week-long GLOBE workshop has been coordinated in July 2007 with HSTA and state funding to train HSTA teachers in GLOBE. Mr. King will also attend this workshop. Project investigator, Todd Ensign, will be directing this GLOBE workshop for HSTA teachers. |
