To participate, applicants agree to complete all requirements of the project courses. Each course is three credits, and both are required. Each course must be taken for graduate level (600 level) credit, NOT professional development (930 level). If you are not currently a WVU graduate student, you will need to apply for admission as a non-degree student (code 4599 for education or 1499 for arts and sciences) either on-line http://grad.wvu.edu/apply_now or using the downloadable application http://adm.wvu.edu/r/download/43440 and pay the associated $60 application fee no later than May 1, 2011. Specific graduate course requirements include:
1. Learning about watershed science, including the impact of land use on stream and river conditions;
2. Developing and implementing strategies and utilizing resources that support student understanding of watershed dynamics, geospatial science and technology, and spatial learning skills;
3. Developing computer literacy in CMAP and related computer technologies;
4. Developing maps and other geospatial learning and research products focusing on state and local watersheds;
5. Developing computer literacy in GIS and associated equipment / software / websites;
6. Providing instruction to your students where they develop prerequisite skills in GIS and CMAP necessary for your PBL unit;
7. Developing, teaching (finish by Nov 18), and revising a West Virginia Watershed Dynamics 'Project Based Learning Unit' of at least two (2) weeks duration that includes field-study on a local stream and watershed;
8. Maintaining an electronic reflective journal for the duration of the project that includes responses to various questions;
9. Being an active on-line participant of the project 'learning community', which includes use of communication tools (e.g., threaded discussions, WIMBA live classroom, reviewing the work of project colleagues);
10. Throughout the project, maintaining contact with the teacher-coach (previous participant in WVWD) to whom you have been assigned;
11. Completing surveys and reports.
Although not an assignment in the courses, as a participant in WVWD you are also expected to present an inservice on your PBL unit during Winter-Spring, 2012, to a few of your teacher colleagues in your school district.
